Artist
Jatin Das
Jatin Das is a premier contemporary Indian artist whose multifaceted career spans painting, sculpting, printmaking, and murals. Celebrated for his depiction of the human form, his work captures emotional depth and raw energy.
Early Life and Career
Born on December 2, 1941, in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, Das grew up in a culturally rich environment. He went on to study fine arts at the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, from 1957 to 1962 under the mentorship of Professor S.B. Palsikar. He quickly rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s art scene, breaking away from passive representation to embrace dynamic modernism.
Artistic Style and Legacy
Das’s signature style is defined by its intense focus on the human condition. Three key hallmarks of his style include:
- Dynamic Figuration: His work is deeply fascinated by the human anatomy, depicting “bare figures” in continuous, energized motion rather than static poses.
- Expressive Line Work: He utilizes hurried, powerful contours and rhythmic, sweeping lines that capture immediate emotion, psychological depth, and cosmic vitality.
- Universal Themes: His narratives step away from rigid storytelling, focusing instead on the underlying energy of human relationships, nature, and myth.
Current Years and Cultural Impact
Awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012, New Delhi-based artist Jatin Das remains highly active, recently exhibiting his Exodus 2020 series and a 2023 Bihar Museum retrospective. He also founded the JD Centre of Art in Bhubaneswar, which houses his massive personal collection of over 6,000 traditional hand-fans (Pankhas).
