Chinmay Mehta

Master of Folk Revivalism

Prof. Dr. Chinmay Mehta (born January 24, 1942, in Udaipur, Rajasthan) is an internationally acclaimed Indian painter, muralist, and architectural designer celebrated for preserving and reviving the indigenous art and cultural heritage of Rajasthan.

Early Life and Career

Born into a culturally rich Rajasthani environment, Mehta earned his PhD in 1964 from Agra University, specializing in Rajasthani miniature space treatment. Following his 1967 debut solo exhibition at New Delhi’s AIFACS Gallery, he served as Dean and senior Professor, fundamentally shaping the University of Rajasthan’s fine arts program.

Artistic Style and Legacy

Mehta’s artistic philosophy is defined by transitioning the spirit of folk tradition into modern spaces. His style is characterized by:

  • Thematic Space Mastery: Applying the unique, non-European principles of depth and space found in traditional Rajasthani miniatures onto large canvases.
  • Batik and Allegorical Painting: A pioneering use of Batik art alongside heavily allegorical, symbol-rich paintings during the 1980s.3D
  • Environmental Design: Evolving his practice from two-dimensional canvases to large-scale public murals and three-dimensional heritage architecture.

Legacy and Current Years

National Academy Award winner Mehta expanded his legacy by designing world-famous ethnic resorts like Chokhi Dhani and Dhola Ri Dhani. Currently based in Jaipur, he serves as a vital cultural activist, collaborating with SPIC MACAY and chairing Aayam to promote village heritage tourism and secure India’s vernacular arts.
