Kavita Nayar

Kavita Nayar is a distinguished contemporary Indian artist and master printmaker, highly celebrated for her deeply emotive, spiritual, and multi-disciplinary approach to art.

Early Life and Career

Born in 1957, Nayar completed her BFA at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan (1979) and later earned an MFA from the College of Art, New Delhi. Her academic excellence earned her prestigious international fellowships, including a French Government scholarship to study lithography in Paris and a Charles Wallace Fellowship at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford.

Artistic Style and Legacy

Nayar’s extensive body of work transitions beautifully between abstract shapes and romantic, organic structures. Her style is defined by three key points:

  • Technical Innovation: Revolutionized printmaking over forty years by fusing traditional etching and lithography with zinc plate assemblages and canvas.
  • Personal Mythologies: Artworks act as personal journals, using recurring lotus and seed motifs to symbolize cosmic energy and life’s cyclical nature.
  • Art as Healing: Transformed maternal grief after her daughter’s 2008 loss into spiritual expressions of healing.

Legacy & Current Years

Nayar lives and works in New Delhi as an active freelancer, curator, and institutional jury member. As the Trustee of the Kala Sakshi Memorial Trust (founded in memory of her daughter) and Secretary of the printmaking group Multiple Encounters, she actively dedicates her time to mentoring and funding the next generation of young Indian artists.
