Avijit Roy
Avijit Roy is a contemporary Indian painter, printmaker, and sculptor known for his powerful representations of nature and the human condition.
Early Life and Career
Avijit Roy was born in West Bengal in 1962. He pursued his passion for fine arts by graduating from the Visual Arts and Fine Arts (V.A.F.A.) program at Rabindra Bharati University, West Bengal. He later earned a Post Diploma in Graphic Design from the prestigious Faculty of Fine Arts at M.S. University in Baroda, which deeply refined his printmaking and design sensibilities.
Artistic Style and Legacy
Roy is highly regarded in the contemporary Indian art circuit for his distinct thematic focus and technical experimentation:
The Beast Imagery: His initial, definitive portfolio strongly featured powerful, raw depictions of mammoth black bulls in various manifestations, exploring strength and primal energy.
Chine-Collé Technique: He masterfully experimented with Chine-collé, a printmaking process using thin, delicate rice paper bonded to a heavier base, creating rich textural contrasts.
Spiritual Evolution: Over time, his style evolved from aggressive beast-based drawings to serene, abstract renderings of the Buddha, blending graphic precision with spiritual minimalism.
Later and Current Years
Today, Avijit Roy lives and works out of New Delhi. He continues to actively exhibit his art, participating in national group showcases—such as the recent Continuum exhibition—as well as solo shows across India, the UK, Germany, and Australia. Through ongoing workshops and print collections, his work remains a vital contribution to modern Indian abstraction.
