Brinda Miller
Brinda Miller (born March 16, 1960) is an influential Indian contemporary visual artist, cultural administrator, and public art pioneer who has heavily shaped Mumbai’s modern aesthetic.
Early Life and Career
Born in Mumbai, Miller graduated at the top of her class in Textile Design from the Sir J. J. School of Art in 1979 before pursuing Drawing and Painting at the Parsons School of Design in New York. Disenchanted by the repetitive nature of textile mill design, she pivoted fully to fine arts in the early 1980s, evolving from early realistic landscapes into complex, multi-dimensional abstractions.
Artistic Style and Legacy
Miller’s artistic signature seamlessly bridges fine art and urban spaces, defined by three key elements:
- Architectural Abstraction: Surrounded by a family of architects, her work features structured lines, geometric patterns, and urban grids that blend realism with abstract landscapes.
- Textural Materiality: She uses a heavy mix-media approach, building depth by layering acrylics, oils, cloth, paper, and metallic leafing to create tactile, collage-like, three-dimensional effects.
- Public Art Trailblazer: Believing art belongs to the masses, she revolutionized Mumbai’s streets by creating major murals, including the Maritime Heritage Mural at the Naval Dockyard and installations at Mumbai’s international airport.
Legacy & Current Years
Today, Miller continues to live and work in Mumbai. As the Chairperson of the Kala Ghoda Association, she remains instrumental in directing the iconic Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, transforming the city’s historic precinct into an accessible, open-air cultural venue.
